Enfield, New Hampshire

Set deep in the valley between Mt. Assurance and Mascoma Lake is Enfield, New Hampshire. Residents enjoy activities at Dartmouth College in nearby Hanover, hike local trails in the summer and cross-country ski all winter long. With downhill skiing and Lake Sunapee just down the road, there is always something to occupy time and comfort the soul in this beautiful countryside.

Mascoma Lake offers year-round recreation. In the warmer months, we have a public beach and boat launch. The public beach offers a life guard on duty, and swimming lessons to persons of all ages and skills. It is large enough for speed boats and party barges, yet quiet enough for kayaks and canoes.  Jet ski accessibility is restricted to weekends. Mascoma Lake, fed by the Mascoma River, which meanders through town, offer fishing year-round. In the winter, when the Lake freezes over, many “shanty towns” spring up for ice fishing (there is at least one fishing derby), and the snow machines and other ATVs use the ice for all kinds of entertainment.

Enfield Shaker Museum is another “perk” of living in Enfield. It boasts nine historic buildings, including The Great Stone Dwelling, the largest Shaker dwelling house ever constructed, and home to the Museum. You can also find furniture exhibits and galleries, the Shaker herb and flower gardens, craft demonstrations, guided tours, concerts, special programs, hiking trails and the museum store. And during the holidays, the festive lights of LaSalette attract people from all over New England.

Enfield also has a resident-friendly tax rate, and one of the benefits is that your household rubbish is picked up at curbside every week. We also have a transfer station for all your recycling needs. Enfield has a full-time police force and a volunteer fire department. Hewes Park, which includes a playground and baseball field, as well as the town library and police station, are located in the center of town. Advance Transit bus service makes its way through Enfield and into neighboring Canaan as well.

Enfield also offers close proximity to the Rail Trail, which is regularly maintained and groomed. There are several places in town where you can easily gain access to the Rail Trail. In the warmer months, the trail is frequented by runners, joggers, bicyclists, walkers, and fishermen alike. It meanders next to and over the River and alongside the Lake in several spots, where you are likely to see Great Blue Herons, Merganzers, Mallards, Loons, and even a Bald Eagle or two.
